The Rest of Life

Accommodation was becoming too expensive nowadays.  Martin was really thankful to the fact that Maria (it was her house, where Martin rented a room) still took for Martin’s berth as low price as she could. That morning before going away Martin observed that Maria had no one scent on her bathroom table. He considered that fact as a bit of luck and decided to by her a present for her kindness for him. But wouldn’t it been too tactless? Despite it Martin decided that he just can’t help presenting something to her. A thought about the moment when he would look upon a Maria’s swarthy face full of wonder and surprise made his eyes lustrous and liquid. He brushed sleek hair and went away.

He had a feeling that he can afford anything today. At first he fetched his old friend and not without an effort declined an offer to drink something, in addition prohibition still was in force. Martin liked his old friend and his demeanour and asked him for help in making surprise for Maria.

“You definitely should buy her a pearl!” – He said in an overweening manner.

“You diminish the value of true pearls. Or you consider me as a very solid man. But I just haven’t enough money for this!” – Answered martin not without a bit of exasperating feeling.

“My old friend Martin! Now I’ll show you one place, where you will be able to buy an artificial pearl of such perfect quality, that your Maria will faint!” – He sad fluently.

“I didn’t really notice before, that you are so vehement and voluble,” – Martin said – “It seems to me, that you are too cocksure about it, but I like the idea. Let’s go!”

Martin bought a perfect pearl for Maria this day and left for himself enough money to book a stateroom on a ship going to The Hawaiian Islands. Martin said Maria that he went to an errand in Europe. And before ultimate leaving he pushed a letter with a present for Maria under the door. That’s it. He began a new stage of life. The stage of life that is named “The rest of life”.
